MTG Star Trek Welcome Decks UK Buyer Guide: Ask Your LGS or Preorder the £39.99 Prerelease Pack?

Wizards has made the Star Trek Welcome Decks a current buying question, but not a normal online preorder question. The new announcement says Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek will have five monocolour 40-card Welcome Decks, intended as teaching tools and available through participating Wizards Play Network stores in the future^[1]. It is also the lead item on Wizards' announcements archive today, which is why this is the timely Star Trek decision rather than the older collector-box preorder question^[3]. That makes the first step for a UK buyer unusually simple: ask the local game store before spending on a substitute product.

The paid comparator in the UK snapshot is the Star Trek Prerelease Pack, currently visible at — with 0 preorder row^[5]. It is the cheapest buyable Star Trek row in the current tracked data, but it does a different job. A Prerelease Pack is a sealed event-style purchase; a Welcome Deck is a ready teaching deck. The price question is therefore not "which is better value?" in the abstract. It is whether the buyer needs a first-game teaching route or a paid sealed-product experience.

The Welcome Deck announcement is narrow, and that is why it matters. A Small Paid Box Is Still A Paid Box

The Prerelease Pack has one important advantage over the Welcome Decks: it is currently measurable. The tracked row is a preorder at —, with the same £35.00 lowest listed price and a current spread of £4.99 because only one listing is present^[5]. That is a clean price, but not deep evidence. A single retailer row tells the buyer that £39.99 exists; it does not yet prove that £39.99 is the settled UK market.

Compared with the loose Star Trek Play Booster, currently indexed at £6.99 but out of stock, the Prerelease Pack costs roughly several loose pack prices at today's visible rows. That arithmetic is only a rough context check because pack and prerelease contents are not interchangeable. It is still helpful for budget discipline: the buyer is not making a trivial add-on purchase. At £39.99, the Prerelease Pack is a deliberate sealed spend.
